About Us

The Red Lion is a traditional English pub with an abundance of unique character and charm, located on the edge of Cannock Chase, an area of outstanding natural beauty.

We are within easy access to plenty of walking and cycling routes - an ideal pit stop to rest those tired legs after a day out and about. Dogs and muddy boots welcome in the Bar.

The Trent & Mersey Canal is just down the road and we are also close to the beautiful Shugborough Hall Estate.

Come and say hey!

Our History

The Red Lion was originally the Bowyers Arms which burnt down in the 1930s. It was rebuilt and opened again around 1939, situated on the then main London road to Manchester with much passing trade until the bypass was built in the 1960s.

In 1964 John Cooper (the longest-serving landlord) moved into the Ansells-owned pub and removed the lounge chimney and bar to make it look more like it is today. He left in 1985 as a succession of tenants came and went, then in 1996 his son Adrian Cooper took the helm until 2001 when Marstons were the Landlords.

The present landlord moved in October 2005 and is still in tenure at the moment.

During its history there have been many notable events, the barn area was rented as a working garage, the bar had been turfed and a calf brought in for National Pub Week. More recently the hub for the world-famous Ironman.

Lord Lichfield, Queen Elizabeth II cousin, often visited and is noted for his photography, Pirelli Calendars, he is now interned locally in Colwich Church with members of the Anson family after his death in 2005.
